Staying Healthy and Healing The Body Naturally

Chamomile

The wellbeing of our liver is revealed in how healthy our skin is. Chamomile is an herb, and it’s possible to use it internally to aid the kidneys, liver, and gastrointestinal system. Wastes will soon be processed the way that they were designed to be – through proper removal – and not through your skin, when these organs are wholesome and functioning.

Echinacea
Scientific studies validate that plant infusions are anti inflammatory and hasten epidermis repair. Chemical parts of echinacea additionally shield collagen (the protein that boosts skin strength) from free-radical damage. Echinacea even offers some action against fungi and bacteria.

Thyme
Thyme includes large quantities of the unstable constituent thymol. This herb has anesthetic and anti inflammatory properties. It numbs the itch while decreasing some of the inflammation that comes from scratching. Soak a towel in thyme tea and apply it to any affected regions.

Green Tea
Green tea features antioxidant flavonoids that provide protection against harm from ultra violet light (sunburn, skin aging, skin cancer). You can both drink it in tea form and topically apply products that use it to help your skin.

Licorice Root
Licorice root’s benefits include soothing capabilities and anti inflammatory substances. One study found that a compound in licorice enhanced the activity of external steroids used on psoriasis. A research piece done with people who have rosacea, a disorder marked by regular redness and pimples, discovered a special licorice root infusion reduced skin inflammation.

Have you ever had nail fungus before?  Nail fungus is a common medical condition that affects thousands of people each year.  Nail fungus can cause a lot of discomfort and many people become embarrassed because of the way their nails appear to others.

I have suffered from nail fungus several different times during the course of my life and I can tell you it is not fun!  I have had a couple of cases of nail fungus and in some instances one of my nails lifted permanantly from the bed of the nail.  I even had one case where two of my nails fell out because the fungus infection grew so intense that my hand detached itself from the nails.  Doctors were unsure if my nails were even going to grow back.  Luckily, they did grow back.

As an advocator and as someone who enjoys helping others I am going to teach you how you can figure out if you have nail fungus,  get rid of your nail fungus and transform your nails so they look the best they ever had before.    Do not wait as long as I did… tackle the problem before it worsens.

Not everyone knows what a fungus infection is…
Do you know what a fungus infection is?

A fungal nail infection occurs when a fungus attacks a fingernail, a toenail, or the skin under the nail, called the nail bed. Fungi can attack your nails through small cuts in the skin around your nail or through the opening between your nail and nail bed. If you are healthy, a fungal nail infection probably will not cause serious problems. However, it may look bad, hurt, or damage your nail or nail bed.

Many things could cause nail fungus.

  • Yeasts
  • Molds
  • Different kinds of fungi
The same type of fungus that causes athlete's foot causes most nail fungus. These are all common causes for nail fungus, but there is hope for individuals who have the condition or suffer from it often.  Nail fungus grows in warm, moist places, and they can spread from person to person. You can get a nail fungus infection for many reasons.  Some people have contracted it from, walking barefoot in public places, from public showers, public pools, sharing personal items such as towels and nail clippers.  I got it from four different times from two different nail salons and twice from water seeping between my nails and nail bed.

If you are suffering from nail fungus, you are going to notice one or more of the symptoms I listed below…

  • Your nail turns yellow or white
  • Your nail becomes thicker
  • Your nail will crumble and split
  • You nail may separate from the skin
  • It becomes uncomfortable or painful to wear shoes
  • It becomes uncomfortable or painful to walk
  • It becomes uncomfortable or painful to stand for a long period of time
What is the conventional treatment?

There are antifungal creams available over the counter, but their efficacy is questionable. The oral anti-fungal medications are much more effective, but not without bothersome side effects ranging from skin rashes to liver damage. These medications must be used with caution, especially since treatment is usually long-term. Fluconazole (Diflucan), Itraconazole (Sporanox) and Terbinafine (Lamisil) are a few commonly prescribed oral antifungal medications. They must be taken anywhere from 6 to 12 weeks as these infections are not quick to clear up.

There is a "nail lacquer" called ciclopirox that can be painted on the nail, applying it daily for a week, wiping the layers off with alcohol, then beginning again. This tedious process is done for up to a year and only has a 10% efficacy rate. Any topical application tends to work better when used in conjunction with oral medications. Serious infections may warrant removal of the nail.

Doctors also advise keeping nails trimmed short and allowing time for the feet to dry after showers, baths or swimming, using absorbent socks, and discarding old shoes that may contain fungal spores.

Herbal Treatments

Tea tree oil is a natural disinfectant, possessing fungicidal and anti-bacterial properties that make it popular in treating toenail fungus. Orange oil has also shown promising results when it comes to getting rid of fungus, and can be added to the mixture as well. Always remember to dilute the essential oil before applying to the nail.

Ingredients

-1 teaspoon of tea tree oil
-1/2 teaspoon of orange oil (optional)
-1/2 teaspoon of grapeseed or olive oil
-Cotton balls

Directions

As soon as you notice the tell-tale signs of nail fungus, mix together 1 of tea tree oil, ½ teaspoon of orange oil, and ½ teaspoon of grapeseed or olive oil. Soak a cotton ball in the mixture and apply to affected nail pressing it on gently but firmly so the liquid comes out. Let this dry naturally. Alternatively, you can place 4-5 drops of tea tree oil in enough water to soak your feet in, and do that for 15-20 minutes. Both treatments should be done faithfully morning and evening.

2. Baking Soda and Vinegar Soak

Baking soda is not fungicidal-that is, it does not kill the fungus. It is, however, fungistatic, which means it can prevent fungus from growing and spreading. The reason it acts like this is because it is alkaline-the opposite of acidic-and fungus is able to flourish when its environment is more acidic. It seems counter-intuitive then, that using vinegar to kill nail fungus would be a good idea, but vinegar is a fairly weak acid, and will help kill off the fungus without altering the Ph. of the environment in a harmful way.

Ingredients

-4-5 tablespoons of baking soda
-1 cup of white vinegar or apple cider vinegar
-Water
-Something to soak your feet in
-Paper towels

Directions

First, mix 1 cup of your chosen vinegar with enough water to soak your feet in. Soak for 15 minutes, and then pat dry with paper towels. Follow this by adding several tablespoons of baking soda to enough water to soak your feet in, and soak for 15 minutes. Pat feet completely dry with paper towels. Do this twice a day. The idea is that the vinegar will kill off the fungus, while the baking soda will then inhibit the growth of more.

3. Just Coconut Oil

Bear with me-I am about to get a little bit scientific here, but I find this to be an exciting way to combat fungus without using harsh chemicals. Medium chain fatty acids are almost miracles in how they work as natural fungicides. The fungal membrane is crucial to maintaining the “life” of the fungus, which is why many antifungal treatments target the fungal membrane. Fatty acids, such as the ones found abundantly in coconut oil, naturally insert themselves in the lipid (fat) layer of the fungal membrane and disturb it, leading eventually to cell disintegration and the ultimate destruction of the fungus (to put it in a nutshell.)

Ingredients

-A bit of coconut oil
-Gloves or a sink and soap to wash hands between applications

Directions

Wearing gloves or washing your hands between applications (if you have more than one affected nail) rub coconut oil onto the area and let it absorb and dry naturally. There is no need to gob a whole bunch on-a thin layer will do. Repeat 2-3 times daily.

Coconut oil fungus remedy -

Like athletes foot, you can work towards preventing enail fungus by keeping feet clean and, most importantly, dry. Don’t re-wear socks, and stick to open toed shoes if possible. It takes time and patience to get rid of toenail fungus, and for the nail to grow back healthy and normal again. Be diligent about applying your treatments  and don’t overlook preventative methods to keep the fungus from coming back.

Tip for best results: Before using these treatments, trim back as much of the effected nail as you can with a clean nail clippers (don’t peel with your fingers!)

Make sure to disinfect the clippers after using them to prevent the fungus from spreading. Rinse feet in warm water, and pat dry.

Important:

Remember, fungus could also spread to other nails or your skin. The fungus could also spread to other nails or even to your skin. Nail fungus also cause permanent damage to your nail or nail bed.  If you have nail fungus then there is no time to waste you need to use the right treatment before the nail fungus causes permanent damage or spreads to other parts of your body.

Tip: If you do not treat this condition then, it will not go away.

Every minute each day, our skin on our bodies is open to the elements of natural that can cause our skin to dry, irritate and become damaged. The sun for instance, causes skin to burn, and can cause diseases such as skin cancer. Skin cancer is the most common form of cancer in the United States. More than 3.5 million skin cancers in over two million people are diagnosed annually.

So many things can harm our children and us. For instance, the weather along with other unhealthy elements such as pollution, dirt, grime, the chemicals they spray onto our food, the hormones they inject into the cows and chickens, the chemicals coming from so many chemical plants and many others can cause damage to our skin. In order to maintain healthy beautiful, skin, especially for our children we need to learn how to care for skin the right way using the right products.

Too many lotions on the market contain hazardous ingredients such as parabens, synthetic fragrances and petroleum based ingredients that dry, irritate, and damage the skin. I cannot comprehend why many skincare and cosmetic companies add artificial ingredients and chemicals into their skincare products if they know how harmful it is to our bodies, yet they do anyway.

This is why I use only natural products containing all natural ingredients. I always use Safe Harbor Natural Suncare products and lotions that will not harm my children or my skin. It also carries a high mineral SPF to protect me and my family against cancerous sun rays.

For lotion, I use lotion from www.safeharborsuncare.com. I tried four lotions from Safe Harbor Natural Suncare, the 50 Sensitive lotion for sensitive skin, the 50 baby & Kids with natural moisturizing complex , the 40 face and neck cream and the 30 sensitive lotion for sensitive skin. It smells great, protected our skin from the sun when we were on the beaches in Florida and best yet it leaves your skin smoother than a baby’s bottom.

The sun proactive lotions from Safe Harbor Natural Suncare contain no artificial preservatives, fragrances or dyes. It just contained pure ingredients to protect your skin from the sun and moisturize.

Remember, what you and your family rub into your skin goes through your skin (pores) into your body. Something to think about next time you decide to purchase skincare products or suntan lotions for your family.

What was also impressive is that in addition to protecting your skin naturally from harmful UV radiation, every Safe Harbor product offers a unique and luxurious blend of Mother Nature’s finest ingredients, formulated to keep your skin looking young and radiant.

It contains the most nourishing natural age defying anti-oxidants in all their lotions (excluding Baby and Kids) combining the highly acclaimed Red Algae, Sea Buckthorn, Green Tea Leaves and more.

Their Baby and Kids lotion contain a moisturizing complex including Jojoba oil, Chamomile, Lemon Balm and more. I used the lotions and so did my family and we all agree that it gave a long lasting hydrated and soft feel.

I highly recommend it. It was great to be able to use a suncare lotion, which was a natural, organic product that does not contain any hazardous ingredients.

As an author of the book, “The Complete Herbal Guide: A Natural Approach to Healing the Body - Heal Your Body Naturally and Maintain Optimal Health UsingAlternative Medicine, Herbals, Vitamins, Fruits and Vegetables I found Safe Harbor Natural Suncare to be very beneficial.”

Althea Root aids the body in expelling excess fluid and mucus and will soothe the mucous membranes and a dry, hacking cough. Good for treating bladder infection, digestive upsets, fluid retention, intestinal disorders, kidney problems, sinusitis, and sore throat. It is a natural source of beta-carotene, amino acids, minerals, and vitamins. It is often used as filler in the compounding of pills. Althea Root soothes!
History

Althea Root or Marsh Mallow is a rich source of healing mucilage, and its genus name, Althaea, is derived from the Greekalthe (to cure).

The use of Althea Root originated in traditional Greek medicine and later spread to Arabian and Indian Ayurvedic medicine. Long used as a healing herb, Althea Root was eaten by the Egyptians and Syrians and mentioned by Pythagoras, Plato, and Virgil. The plant was enjoyed by the Romans in barley soup and in a stuffing for suckling pig, while classical herbalists praised its gentle laxative properties.

It was used in Persia to reduce inflammation in teething babies, and the Holy Roman Emperor, Charlemagne (A.D. 800-814), insisted that Althea be planted throughout his kingdom, and in the nineteenth century, some doctors made a meringue from the plant's root juices, egg whites and sugar that hardened into a medicinal candy, which was used to soothe children's sore throats. Althea Root is a hardy perennial that grows best in wet, marshy areas.

Plant Description

The plant bears hibiscus-like blossoms of light red to white or purple in color and may grow to a height of four to six feet. All parts of the plant are used in various ways, i.e., medicinal, decorative, culinary, and cosmetic purposes, but the root is mainly used for medicinal purposes. Althea Root is rich in mucilage, paraffin, pectin, lecithin, tannins, acids, beta-carotene, amino acids, calcium, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, selenium, zinc, B-vitamins and vitamin C.

Medical Uses

Althea (Marshmallow) Root's particular excellence involves soothing irritated tissue and relieves various forms of inflammation, especially of the mucous membranes, since it is high in mucilage which is very soothing to the membranes. It aids the body in expelling excess fluid and mucus. The herb is used in many lung preparations and cough syrups to alleviate a dry, hacking cough and laryngitis. It is also known to be a good expectorant, helping to loosen and expel phlegm from the lungs.

Althea Root is an old-time remedy for gastrointestinal disorders, strengthening the digestive system, because it contains polysaccharides that form a protective layer on the stomach lining and will lower stomach acids. The herb is frequently used to treat ulcers and colitis.

The herb improves the functioning of the immune system, since it is known to stimulate phagocytosis, the immune process in which cells called macrophages engulf and digest infectious micro-organisms.

Althea Root may be used externally in an ointment as an emollient to soften and soothe skin and dry hands. The high mucilage content will also promote rapid healing of diaper rash, skin ulcers, sunburns, and psoriasis and problem skin.

When bothered with the pain and inflammation of asthma, laryngitis, bronchitis, sore throat or dry, hacking cough, try Malva Leaf to help rid the lungs and respiratory tract of excess fluid and mucus, while at the same time, it helps to soothe irritation and inflammation of the mucous membranes.

Plant Description
Malva Leaf is an annual or perennial that is native to southern Europe and Asia and later introduced to North America. The plant may be cultivated or found wild in waste places, fields and along fences and roadsides in Europe and North America, growing to a height of four feet in well-drained to poor soil in sun or partial shade.

The whitish root puts up a round stem, bearing alternate, light green, downy leaves and produces pink or purple flowers, which bloom from May to October. Malva Leaf (like other mallows) is one of the oldest medicinal plants in the world.

History:
It was used in teas in China more than five thousand years ago and employed by Greek and Roman physicians to treat internal and external disorders, calling it omnimorbium, meaning "the remedy of all illnesses," It continued as an important "cure-all" treatment throughout the Middle Ages, and like all mallows, it is principally known for its soothing qualities. There are many species of mallow that are often used interchangeably with Malva sylvestris (high mallow), including M. Moschata (musk mallow), M. neglecta (dwarf or low mallow), and M. rotundifolia (roundleafed mallow); however, none are quite as potent as their close relative, Althaea officinalis (the marsh mallow). Some constituents in Malva Leaf include a high mucilage content (made up of complex carbohydrates), flavonoids, anthocyanidins, polysaccharides, volatile oil and tannin.

Malva Leaf, like all mallows, is a demulcent, and its particular excellence involves soothing irritated tissue and relieving various forms of inflammation. The leaves contain high amounts of mucilage, made up of complex carbohydrates, which give the herb most of its soothing activity, though flavonoids and anthocyanidins may also contribute. It is effective in countering irritation and inflammation of the mucous membranes, and because it contains polysaccharides that form a protective layer on the stomach lining, it is said to lower stomach acids and is useful in relieving gastrointestinal disorders, such as gastric catarrh, enteritis, indigestion, ulcers and colitis.

As an expectorant, Malva Leaf is said to help loosen and expel phlegm and congestion from the lungs. It aids the body in expelling excess fluid and mucus, and because of its soothing, demulcent qualities, it not only removes phlegm, it also acts to soothe and relieve inflammation of the larynx and tonsils, dry coughs, sore throat, hoarseness, lung catarrh, bronchitis, asthma, emphysema and irritation of respiratory passages. The German Commission E has approved Malva Leaf preparations for the relief of sore throats and dry coughs.

Malva Leaf is considered a mild laxative when used in larger doses.

Early research in test tube studies shows one carbohydrate in mallows has been shown to inhibit a component of the immune system known as the complement cascade. Excessive activation of the complement cascade has been implicated in chronic inflammation and autoimmune disorders, suggesting that further research into Mallow Leaf in these areas is warranted.

Malva Leaf is said to have diuretic properties that increase the flow of urine. It has been used to soothe the urinary tract and relieve cystitis and bladder infection.

Used externally, Malva Leaf is an emollient and demulcent that softens tissue and soothes damaged or inflamed surfaces, including dry hands, sunburn and diaper rash. In addition to its emollient qualities, it is also mildly astringent, and when included in poultices, it is helpful for sores, psoriasis, weeping eczema, boils, abscesses, insect bites and wounds.

What Is Continuous Spike-Wave in Slow Wave Sleep Syndrome? (A RARE EPILEPSY)

Image via Wikipedia Continuous spike-wave in slow wave sleep syndrome (CSWS) is a rare epilepsy syndrome in which children lose a wide range of developmental abilities, including language, motor skills, memory, and visuospatial skills. This syndrome occurs in school-aged children. Development prior to onset of CSWS may be normal, but children with CSWS often have some pre-existing learning difficulties. In many children there is no known cause of epilepsy, although some children are found to have abnormal brain formation or have a prior history of brain infection. We still do not understand how these structural changes result in the continuous EEG discharge.

Many, but not all, children with CSWS also have seizures. There can be many different seizure types, including absence, generalized tonic-clonic, and focal seizures. The seizures can be difficult to treat. Even in those who already had learning difficulties, there is a clear loss of skills across multiple deve…

Vitamin B12: The Most Important Nutrient You Need

Image via Wikipedia
Image by icethim via Flickr If you aren’t getting enough vitamin B12, it is indeed very important – and you may very well not be thinking about it. One reason you aren’t thinking about it is that we tend to fall in (and out!) of love with one nutrient at a time (such as vitamin C, beta carotene, lycopene and so on), and vitamin B12 isn’t the nutrient du jour. But the other reason you may not be thinking about it is … because you can’t. A deficiency of vitamin B12 can limit your ability to think clearly about anything! (More on that momentarily.)
Like all vitamins, B12 is an organic compound, made from carbons (as opposed to minerals, which are inorganic), and essential for our normal metabolic function and health. Also, like most vitamins, B12 plays a wide variety of roles in our metabolism. The short list of important effects B12 has on your health includes these: Vitamin B12 is essential for the manufacture of red blood cells; a deficiency leads to a cha…
